The Truth About Black Dye
Chemical Load, Skin Health, and Energy
Do you ever pause to think about how that piece of clothing came to be the colour it is? Often, in most fast-fashion, it’s through a heavy chemical load with dyes and synthetic fibres. Colours created by man, not nature.
Black is no different. In fact, it’s the worst of them all. What is seen as a traditionally elegant and timeless colour is actually a toxic load, both energetically and physically.
Let’s dive into what makes black such a difficult dye to create and for the body to handle.

Black: Twice The Chemicals As Other Colours
From a textile perspective, black is the most chemically complex colour to produce. Unlike lighter shades, it cannot be created with a single dye. Research into textile dyeing shows that achieving a stable black often requires 10 to 20 different synthetic dyes, supported by fixatives, salts, surfactants, and metal-based mordants.
Up to 60 to 80 individual chemical substances may be involved in the dyeing and finishing of black fabric, nearly twice as many as other colours.
These chemicals are chosen for speed, colour fastness, and cost efficiency, not for skin compatibility. This matters most in underwear, leggings, bras, and sleepwear, where warm skin and daily wear increase the potential for chemical transfer, particularly for those with sensitive skin, eczema, or hormonal imbalances.

Does Black Exist in Nature?
In nature, true black is rare.
But what we often perceive as black is usually something else.
Deep brown soil.
Charcoal stone.
Indigo feathers.
Shadowed bark.
The night sky.
These tones hold depth, movement, and softness. They are never uniform.
The jet black commonly found in mass produced clothing is largely a human-made construct, achieved through toxic chemicals, rather than natural, healing pigment.

Why Plant-Based Dyes Do Not Create Flat Black
Plants struggle to produce pure black pigment.
Botanical dyes come close, with deep greens, blues, reds, purples, browns, and ochres. But to reach something closer to ‘true’ black, dyers must slowly layer plant pigments, often indigo with tannins and minerals. Even then, the result is never harsh or flat. It is a soft charcoal, blue-black, or deep earthy tone that shifts gently with light and wear.
Unlike synthetic dyes, plant pigments kindly bind to fibre rather than coating it. They allow fabric to breathe, move, and support sensitive skin.
Skin, the Nervous System, and Chemical Load
The body is deeply intelligent. When it senses foreign chemical substances on the skin, it does not interpret them as neutral.
Over time, low level exposure can contribute to:
-
chronic skin irritation
-
nervous system disregulation
-
inflammation without an obvious cause.
Many of our beautiful customers come to us after years of skin sensitivities that no cream could fix. When switching to natural colours and organic fibres, the body feels safe and calm, and skin settles down.
This is why our garments are made with organic GOTS cotton and dyed only with plants, to support skin health, nervous system balance, and full body vitality.

Colour, Vibration, and Energy
Beyond chemistry, colour carries frequency.
In many traditional systems, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, black is associated with absorption and inward pull.
Synthetic black, especially when chemically forced, can feel heavier and more static on the body.
Every natural hue holds a vibrational frequency that resonates with the wearer. We choose plant based colours that feel lighter, clearer, and carry a much higher-vibe than man-made colours. We invite you to tune into how the colour makes you feel, and experiment with aligning your wardrobe with your soul’s energy and the healing power of nature.

A New Chapter: Botanical Black
While true black is rare in nature, it is not impossible.
At dea, we have exciting news: we are currently working with our Balinese dyers to create a Botanical Black. A high vibe, low tox alternative created through slow layering of plant pigments and deep respect for fibre. It will not be flat or synthetic. It will hold depth, softness, and its own natural rhythm just like the intensity of night sky or the depth of the sea. It will be a natural darker hue your body can trust.
Stay tuned for our upcoming Botanical Black range, or to shop our current range of high-vibe, naturally dyed clothing, shop here.
